Ellie shut down her computer when there was a knock at the door. She glanced up, seeing Rebecca leaning against her doorframe. They hadn’t spoken since Ellie had arrived back at the office, both getting on with their work, but now with no clients to see, there was no more avoiding her. Ellie was still pissed that Rebecca had accused her of impropriety and had upset Devon. Seeing Devon so devastated had ripped the breath from Ellie’s chest. Hopefully, they could move on from this and go back to being friends, without interruption.

“Is it okay if I come in?” Rebecca asked, her gaze worried.

Ellie nodded. She leaned back in her chair, folding her arms across her chest. Rebecca sat in her guest chair on the other side of the desk.

“How is she?”

Ellie didn’t need to ask to whom she was referring. “Not great. You upset her really badly. She was in tears when I got there.”

Rebecca ran her hand through her hair and sighed. “I don’t know what to say, except sorry. I’ll call her and apologise.”

“I don’t think she’ll answer. She doesn’t want to come back here anymore.”

“What about her therapy?”

Ellie shrugged. She didn’t agree with Devon’s decision, but it was her choice to make. As her friend, she could give her opinion, but it was up to Devon whether she took her advice or not. “She won’t come back. She thinks she did something wrong. She doesn’t understand why it would be a problem us being friends.”

“You know I didn’t mean to make her feel that way. I just wasn’t expecting you two to be friendly.”

“I know.”

“You have to admit, it is a little strange.”

“Why?”

“Ellie, I get you’re an empath and you want to help everybody, but you didn’t even know her when you went charging around to her home that first time. You’ve never done that before.”

Rebecca was right, she hadn’t. How could she explain that when Devon had knocked her over and stared into her eyes like a frightened animal, something switched in Ellie and she needed to know if she was alright. That two second interaction was enough to pull her in. She hadn’t been able to let go since. Ellie glanced away from Rebecca’s shrewd gaze.

“And now you’re friend’s,” Rebecca continued. “Help me understand. Why Devon?” Ellie shrugged as she rubbed her palms on her trousers under the desk. Rebecca wasn’t stupid, she knew why, but still Ellie couldn’t say the words. Rebecca said them for her. “You’re attracted to her, aren’t you?”

Ellie briefly closed her eyes and nodded.

“Ellie.”

“I know. I can’t help it. But it’s okay. We’re just friends. Nothing has happened.”

“Does she know?”

“Of course not. And I have no intention of telling her. It’s just a crush. It’ll go away soon enough.”

“And what if it doesn’t?”

“It will.” Ellie put as much conviction into her voice as she could, trying to convince herself as well as Rebecca.

“You need to be careful. She’s still in a fragile state of mind. She’s relying on you as a friend.
